History of Hypnosis
The history of hypnosis traces back to ancient times, including ancient Greece. Spiritual leaders, shamans, and healers in ancient civilizations explored altered states of consciousness for healing and spiritual growth.
Hypnosis and trance states are fundamental human traits, which have been around for as long as humanity itself. Ancient texts from Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome all describe practices we might now regard as hypnotic. They used techniques like visualizations and suggestions while employing deep focus (meditation) to tap into the innate power of the body, spirit, and mind.
In ancient Greece, people visited “dream temples when challenged and to discover ways to heal themselves: there, they were hypnotized to help alleviate problems and find solutions The scientific study of hypnosis began in the 18th century with Franz Anton Mesmer and later, James Braid coined the term “Hypnosis,” emphasizing focused attention and bridging spiritual practices with scientific inquiry. Hypnosis blends ancient wisdom with scientific exploration, emphasizing the connection between mind, spirit, and healing.
